December 26th is a public holiday in Alsace-Moselle!

December 26 is St. Stephen’s Day. This Catholic holiday celebrates the first Christian martyr. Alsace-Moselle was German at the end of the 19th century. This is why it has kept this Germanic tradition. Kaiser Wilhelm II’s decree, ratified in 1892, allowed the annexed territories not to work on December 26, but also on Good Friday, as in the rest of Germany.
